Reader’s Request: Tips On Contouring

Bookmark and Share

It’s been so long, that i nearly forgot about the contouring post. :P

I’m not one who does a lot of contouring, but it’s one the fastest way to make you have a slimmer face, higher nosebridge, a more defined face structure etc…

Anyway, I took the following pictures from Mina (Malaysia) February 2009 issue. :)

Simple basic steps of contouring. :D

For Step 1 in the picture, use any highlighter of your choice, but from my experience, find something with very fine shimmers and make sure it doesn’t settle into your pores, giving you the greasy look.

For fair skin, you can use light pinkish/ white/ beige highlighters. For medium skintone, stick with beige-goldenish colours. I think those colours flatter medium skintone better than pink/ white, as those may look too garish. For dark skintones, bronzers! All of these are just my opinion though. You will still need to test the colours out to see which suits you best :)

Highlighting the T-zone is not really recommended for oily skins, as it will look even greasier comparing to no highlights. But if you pick your product well, it won’t be a problem! :D

For the application, just lightly brush your highlighter over the T-zone and you are set! Don’t go OTT that’s all! :D

For Step 2, pick a bronzy brown colour, or any colour which is matte and is slightly darker than your skintone. The reason why it should be matte is because your highlighter is kinda shimmery, and you don’t want risk it by looking like a disco ball right? Follow the area highlighted in the picture to contour.

And there you go, a more define nosebridge and facial structure!

For a slimmer face, use any bronzy brown blusher or any powder which is slightly darker than your skintone which is matte and then follow the arrows on contouring the face.

The reason that you contour starting from the outside sweeping into the inside, is that it will look more natural comparing to you sweeping it from inside out. :) If the lines are too noticeable, remember to blend it well!

Not everyone is blessed with a sharp nose, so what to do with a big fat nose? Contouring! Ahahah! Lame.

Anyway, use a bronzy brown/ colour that’s slightly darker than your skintone and is matte, and gently brush it on the side of your nose, like the picture indicated. Don’t do too much, otherwise it will look fake. You don’t want that, right?

There you go! Simple basic contouring that even beginners can get it right! :) Bear in mind that highlighter should be slightly shimmery, while your contouring colour should always be MATTE, unless you know how to work a shimmery one perfectly well without looking like a disco ball!

If you got more tips about contouring, do share them okay!

  1. Hey plue!

Which brands are you using to contour and highlight? I received NYX’s Mosaic Powder in Cafe as a gift recently, but I don’t think it works for me as a bronzer (doesn’t show up on my face).

PS: the My Scheming Beauty seller on your sidebar, is she on LYN?
