Fail! Dove Hair Shampoo & Conditioner

Bookmark and Share

Dove fans, I’m sorry.

Clearly, the title tells you basically everything you need to know about my impression and feelings towards Dove.

If you’d like to know more, just read on.

Otherwise just skip this entry and read some other entry that I wrote earlier?

***************************************************************************************

Why do I sound like I’m some diplomat?

Anyways.

I tried very hard to love Dove. I really did. But Dove didn’t want my love. Oh the woes. :(

My sisters tried to love Dove too, but still, Dove didn’t want their love either.

I guess Dove just love the trash bin better.

Do you want to hear our tragic love story?

Read on!

2 or 3 years ago, I was bored with Pantene. I decided to break up with it. Thus, I was in search for someone (thing) new.

And I was smitten with Dove!

With all those lovely promises like 1/4 moisturizing cream, leaving hair soft and moisturized and all, and with a rather affordable price tag to boot, any girl would be suckered into buying it back home. So I took home Dove Moisturetherapy Shampoo and Conditioner (dark blue bottle) thinking all the TLC it could give me.

And it isn’t a “we-live-happy-forever” ending.

In fact, I was tortured by it. My hair felt fried and crispy and crunchy for the whole period I was using it. Even using the conditioner didn’t help at all.

Worst part?

It is said that Dove Moisturetherapy Shampoo is for dry and damaged hair and intensively hydrates and restores moisture for better manageability. Dove Moisturetherapy Conditioner coats hair to provide added protection.

Puh-leaze!

My hair felt nothing like it at all!

After using 1/2 bottle, I decided to trash it.

Then my sisters said let them try, maybe they’ll love it.

And well, my sisters told me this stuff is poisonous. Never let it get near their hair anymore. LOL.

FYI, my sisters both have fine hair, and not as dry as mine. :)

So… off it goes to the bin.

Fast forward into year 2009, I decided to give Dove another chance upon reading Kahani’s and Paris’.

This time, I wanted it to be anti dandruff.

Yes you heard me. I got DANDRUFF! eeeeeeks!

I didn’t have them until I started working, and it’s getting worse because of the stress level and also the non stop air conditioning, and of course, my not-very-healthy lifestyle and diet.

I used so many products and none of them work, I had to try Dove.

I bought this…

And sigh.

It actually made my dandruff even worse!

Other than giving more dandruff, it also fried my hair to a crispy crunchy sound which I so hate it when my hair is dry.

Off it goes into the bin.

No more Dove hair shampoo or conditioners for me, they hate my hair. Well, I now hate them too because they hate me. Haha. Vicious cycle.

Anyone else thinks that Dove is bad for their hair?

I hope I’m not alone! :P

  1. UGH. Tell me about it. I can never use Dove as well. :(
Elyn used Dove before if I’m not mistaken. And it works for her.

As for me and my family…we stay far far away from Dove products. Particularly because we realized that the shampoo…after using it, smells nice and all…but a few hours down the road…it makes your scalp smell really horrid!!! YUCK. >_<

Traclyn: Tried Clear & Head & Shoulders, didn’t work for me. Might try Selsun Blue :) I can’t use any Dove shampoo/ condi, just make my hair crispy.

Yomiko: I guess Dove doesn’t suit everyone :) Might suit you now though, have you given it a try? :)

  5. Ha! I hate Dove too. I used their bath products, but not hair products. Enough is enough lol Once I forgot to bring my shampoo on my trip to hong kong and had to use my cousin’s Dove shampoo and conditioner. Terrible, terrible, terrible dandruff! I don’t usually have dandruff, so I know who the culprit is.
The worst part is even when I used my old hair products back, the dandruff decided to make my scalp home! Sigh.

  6. Oh no so sad to hear this!

I was a Dove loyal customer since back in 2004 if not mistaken. I’ve tried to switch to other brands and guest what, only Dove give me manageable hair! My hair condition is tough and dry, so Dove really works well for me~

Elyn: What works for you didn’t work for me :(

  7. no…i don’t dare to give a try on it already it scares me once and i wont let the tragedy happen on my lovely hair again…i rather go on with me head & shoulder!haha…

  8. Ugh, Dove. Their shampoo made my hair poofy and tangled while their conditioner made my hair coarser.

Plue, I recommend you try Himalaya’s Anti-Dandruff shampoo. ONLY the Anti-Dandruff shampoo. Their other shampoos will make your scalp itch..tho just mildly.

Also, if your conditioner contains too much silicone it might trigger your dandruff. Just a thought.

  9. Yomiko: If you have found your HG, then that’s great!

Irene: I guess alot of ppl suffer the same fate like I do huh? I tried Himalaya’s, but after half bottle, it didn’t work for me anymore :( I don’t use conditioner near my scalp at all, only the ends, so hm, m not sure if that triggers my dandruff problem :(

    [Reply]

  10. haha i tried this before!
but it waas a free sample bottle.
didn’t do anything to my hair.
i converted to clear “anti itch” formula.
it works! :) whole family fighting for my shampoo now.
lol but i wanna switch to something more caring for my ends :(

  11. You can give Kiehl’s Amino Acid shampoo + conditioner (not anti-dandruff but cleans nicely) a go. They do sell it in travel size (75ml). Worth to try. I use them myself. I think these can serve as a basic hair care while you alternate with your anti-dandruff shampoo.

Btw, Selsun gave me grey hair :( . Go easy on this one if you do use it. I think the formula is quite strong.

Hope your dandruff problems goes away soon.

    [Reply]

  12. Lynn: Clear huh? Didn’t help me either :(

Irene: Basic hair care is okay for me, but I need something for my dandruff :( It just won’t go away! Yikes! Selsun Blue gives you grey hair? Better stay away! LOL

  13. I really have to comment on this too. haha. I think the Dove Treatment mask, don’t know what the name is, but it’s brownish, bronze colour tub, FAIL too. LOL.

Same like you, I know Dove has fans, and sometimes, I feel so sorry that I have to shoot its Hair Treatment down to the bottom. It just doesn’t works.

From your review, it sounds like none of their hair care is working.

  14. Jyoan: Dove never work once for me or for my sisters, but that’s only for their haircare range. Body stuff are alright though :) Dove have their fans, but too bad, I am not one. LOL.

  15. YES! i thought i was the only one who can’t deal with dove products. luckily i found your webpage.

previously my hair was very frizzy, dry, and my i’m experiencing hair loss problems.

i thought it was my dry hair that causes my hairs to fall and so i tried to use dove shampoo.(the light blue bottle)

it works for the first few weeks. my hair turns soft and moisturized but the effect fades away soon after that.

now my hair’S worst and my hair loss doesn’t reduce one bit.

do u have any recommendation of hair care products that can help to cure my excessive hair loss problems?

    thanks=)

Seri: I’ve heard from friends that Pantene Hair Fall Control is good, so maybe you wanna give it a try. Can hair loss be a genetic problem that runs down in your family? As I know it does (since my family does have that problem) or is it due to stress and hormonal changes and food? Those might affect your hair too :)

    Stella
: From the name it does sound like a conditioner. Just try lathering it up, if it doesn’t foams or wash up properly and feels slippery, my guess it’s a conditioner :)

  16. I bought Balance Therapy Conditioner with Protecting Serum Normal Hair,I don’t like to sound niave but is this a hair shampoo or just a conditioner – should appreciate your advices asap. Thanks Stella

  17. plue : thanks for the suggestion. i’m using that recently till now after my bad experience with that dove shampoo but to no avail. still hair loss. perhaps it is due to genetic problem as my mom had experience it before but her hair loss rate is not as fast as mine! haha. but anyways, thanks for your opinion! =D

  18. Actually dove is really good for your hair.. Pantene on the other hand coats your hair with a plastic coat and damages it, so when you stop using it your hair goes all crispy & dry.
its not doves fault, but pantene.

Hi Rabia, but I don’t use Pantene for years already :)

Dove just isn’t working on my hair, I really wish it would though.

Rabia: Yeah, this guy who was cutting my hair once asked me if I was using Pantene products, and I said yes, and he said he could tell because of the build up of silicon in my hair :/ And I was using a Pantene conditioning spray at the time, and I’m sure that was the last time I used it too, because he went on to say how bad Pantene is for your hair, and that the build up of silicon will never go away. But sorry for all you Pantene users out there
    :(

    Hi Alisha,

Perhaps their PR thought that you weren’t using the correct one hence they gave you something else to try? I am sorry to hear that Dove didn’t work on you, but I know alot of my friends who swear by them. I guess it didn’t suit our hair that’s all :)

  20. No, Dove is actually the only shampoo/conditioner I can use that won’t make my hair look like total crap. But, different shampoo for different folks, guess it just depends on your hair type. I have thick hair, so maybe it just doesn’t like thin hair? I’ve actually tried many different shampoos/conditioners, I used to be a regular user of Suave, and I’ve tried Pantene, Guarnier Fructece (not sure how you spell that), Herbal Essences, and until I’ve tried Dove, my hair has always been dried out, poofy, and REALLY hard to brush. Now my hair actually is soft, manageable, and what I call flattened down, and I use the 2 in 1 Dove moisture therapy :P It’s a conditioner and shampoo mixed in one. I also use a leave in conditioner for the days when I don’t shampoo my hair. Sorry for the mini novel, just sharing ;)

Hi Haven, thanks for your insight on this, I guess different hair types react differently. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. ;)

  21. I am 46 years old and I never had dandruff in my entire life.. until I used Dove damage therapy. I have TERRIBLE dandruff now and I can’t seem to get rid of it despite trying several other products. While I love Dove soaps, I would caution anyone and everyone to avoid Dove shampoos and conditioners.

Hey Paula, sorry to hear what Dove has done to your hair. Any other brand of shampoo/ conditioner could help you reduce the dandruff?
